What
is asbestos?
Asbestos
is a naturally occurring mineral in nature. It was once considered
a miracle product because of its qualities. One could think
of it as woven stone; asbestos fibers are very light weight,
fire resistant, and extremely strong. In fact, it is the only
mineral that can be woven.
How
does asbestos enter the environment we work and/or live in?
Asbestos
fibers can be extremely small; microscopic in size. Because
they are so tiny if they are some how disturbed: brushed, torn
out or rubbed from the product they are woven into they will
become an airborne dust.
How
might someone be exposed to Asbestos?
Some
one might be exposed by working or living in an environment
that is currently removing or placing products that are made
from asbestos.
What
are the possible health risks of asbestos?
Asbestos
exposure has been known to cause pleural mesothelioma, abdominal
mesothelioma, asbestosis, pulmonary fibrosis, and various health
conditions.
Can
I be tested for exposure to asbestos?
If
you believe you may have been exposed to asbestos it is important
to have chest X-rays performed by a physician
